The City of Toronto's Culture Division and Fort York offer a variety of special education programs to complement your classroom curriculum and to meet your students' needs.  

Fort York offers a Hands-on, living history experience, that engages students first-hand in the social and military history of the fort, Toronto and Canada.

Pioneers at York

JK to Grade 3    1.5 hourscooking lesson

Discover the daily life and routines of the soldier and his family and officers.

Grades 4 to 8    1.5 hours

Explore the life of an early garrison community during the War of 1812
Visit the historic 1826 kitchen

Fort York and the War of 1812child and re-enactor

Grade 7    1.5 hours

Discover the function and role of the fort and its inhabitants during the War of 1812.  Activities include:

Musket drill
Examination of the Battle of York
A walk around the defenses and a discussion of fortification technology

Fort York and the Rebellion

Grade 7    1.5 hours

Explore the effect of the 1837 rebellion on soldiers, officers and Toronto civilians.  Activities include:

Militia muster and musket drill
Exploration of an 1837 officers barracks
Examination of 1837 weapons technology

Living History Program - Full Daydrum lesson

Grade 4 to 8    4 hours

Re-live the daily life of this early 19th century community in this full day program.  Build your own program from workshops including:

Cooking in a historic kitchen
Musket Drill
Period music and dance
Archeology

Toronto and the Fur Trade

Grade 6    1.5 hours

Investigate the patterns and practices of the fur trade in the Toronto area during the 18th century.  Through the use of maps, models and artifacts students can discover the changing relationship s between Native peoples and Europeans during the dynamic era.  Program includes hands-on examination of trade goods and archeological artifacts.

Living History Program - Full Day and Overnight

Grade 3 and up (includes meals)

Take this unique opportunity to experience garrison life first hand and re-enact the duties and leisure pursuits of the fort's inhabitants.  Sleep overnight in the historic barracks and eat a typical soldier's stew.  Choose from a wide range of workshops:

Analyze archeological material
Recreate a recipe in the historic kitchen
Learn about the Iroquois in the War of 1812
Participate in music, dance, drama and storytelling
